lessons on a train ride

Today, I did something I rarely do. I took the train. In my original plan, I was gonna blog about the woahs and woes of today's train ride (:p) but I changed my mind since, after the train ride back.

It's amazing how God speaks through even the simplest of things, and I cannot help but share what I learned today. On a train ride. Yup.

There I was, sitting down quietly when I noticed a 'pakcik' standing nearby. The first thought that ran through my head was, "Should I give the 'pakcik' my seat?".

Then, soon after that thought popped in my head, I was inundated by other conflicting thoughts like how heavy my bag was and how I was already feeling queasy and how there were young men seated who should give their seats instead since I'm a lady, how scared I was to even open my mouth and talk to him to offer my seat, and what would I gain in return for offering my seat ....

WAIT.

What was that last thought?

Yup. You read that right. Immediately the Lord taught me a valuable lesson there and then in that train. The lesson of love. The lesson TO love. WITHOUT expecting return.

"... having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end." John 13:1b

Oh how selfish we can be, always expecting something for what we put in. Honestly, that also becomes the reason for either unhappiness or self-absorbency.

It was a good lesson. A good reminder. And one most timely too.

LOVE. But don't expect to be loved back.
GIVE. But don't expect to receive anything.
BE A FRIEND. But don't expect to get a friend.

Continue loving and caring, even if no one loves you back. I believe, as His children, that's what He would want us to do.

"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35

:)

A lesson well taught. Thank you, Lord.
